by f this year’s Academy Awards are anything to go by, Austin Butler is not just a method actor, but a method dresser, too. The Elvis star – who famously maintained his accent for the Baz Luhrmann biopic both on- and off-screen for three years – wore some Nashville-appropriate Saint Laurent boots to the Oscars ceremony that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a young Elvis Presley.
Butler took a leaf out of the style playbooks of Lil Nas X and Timothée Chalamet by choosing the Cuban-heeled style, which offers added height as well as a striking silhouette.
He paired his patent boots with a clean-cut suit, also by Saint Laurent – which featured another subtle nod to Elvis with its padded shoulders – and a bow-tie. “I had three years where [Elvis] was my only focus in life, so I’m sure there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked in that way,” Butler said of his method acting technique at the Golden Globes. Now, it seems he’s incorporating Elvis’ inimitable style into his own.
Butler was nominated for Best Actor for Elvis (for which he has already won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA) but he lost out to Brendan Fraser for The Whale. He still went to the famous Oscars after-party however, where he was joined by model girlfriend Kaia Gerber. The pair have been dating since late 2021 and made their official debut as a couple at the Met Gala in 2022.

Butler wore another Saint Laurent look – this time, a silky, midnight-blue shirt – while Gerber chose a glittering, halterneck Celine gown. The couple were just two of the well-dressed guests to attend; others included Naomi Campbell in Schiaparelli couture and Daisy Edgar Jones in a daring, sheer Gucci gown.
